The construction industry has a wellbeing problem. Research from the Chartered Institute of Building doesn’t mince words: the sector is in crisis when it comes to mental health. Long hours, high-stress environments, and relentless pressure are taking their toll on the people who build our world.
But what if improving site wellbeing could be as simple as adding a box?
When Mace Group Decided to Do Things Differently
At their Duke Street project in London, Mace Group took an approach that most construction sites overlook entirely: they focused on the construction phase itself, not just the finished building.
Their solution? A PlantBox living wall installation that would stay with workers throughout the entire build.
“A suitable working environment for personnel is crucial,” explains Sal Capotosto, Mace’s project director for the site. “Wellbeing can be increased using nature and greenery, it’s something I have always been passionate about on my projects. I am already planning for more to be added.”
What Makes a PlantBox Different
A PlantBox is a modular, stackable living wall system designed specifically for construction sites. It’s not just a planter with aspirations.
At Duke Street, the installation became a focal point and wayfinding marker for staff. Its strategic placement created something rarely found on building sites: a genuinely calming space amidst the cement and cinder blocks.
The benefits started immediately after the 90-minute installation:
Stress Reduction – The demonstrated calming effects of plants created visible relief for workers throughout their day.
Improved Air Quality – Plants actively filtered dust and particulates, making the breathing environment noticeably better.
ESG Credentials – Tangible, visible evidence of commitment to environmental and social governance goals.
Built for Sites, Not Show Homes
Here’s the reality: construction sites aren’t known for their gentle handling of décor. That’s why PlantBoxes are engineered from 100% recycled materials tough enough to survive the occasional brush with a toolbelt or bag of sand. They’re rated to last over 10 years, even in demanding environments.

On the practicality of PlantBoxes, Keith Hills, founding Director of Eco Green Group, said: “Even on the tightest sites, it’s a simple and scalable way to add greenery to projects nationwide.
“The construction phase is often overlooked so it’s great to see Mace putting their people first and using nature to improve their workspaces.”
After a simple 90 minute installation, the Duke Street project benefitted from a range of passive benefits throughout the life of the build including: Stress reduction and the demonstrated calming effects of plants, improved air quality with plants filtering dust and other particulates along with tangible evidence of Mace Group working towards ESG commitments.
With the project completed, the boxes can be permanently integrated into the site or removed and transferred to the next project, meaning a PlantBox could become one of a company’s most loyal employees. Sal Capotosto, Mace’s project director for this site, said: “A suitable working environment for personnel is crucial.
“Wellbeing can be increased using nature and greenery, it’s something I have always been passionate about on my projects. I am already planning for more to be added.”
